break the rules

In a moment of extreme honesty, Arnold Schwarzenegar said that if you want to win, you have to break a few rules. I believe he could have been alluding to his self-admitted use of performance-enhancing drugs in a time when they weren’t illegally or officially prohibited in the nascent world of professional bodybuilding. However it is true that innovation requires thinking about things differently, and then doing things that aren’t commonly done, taught, and accepted as ‘normal’.

Breaking rules is different than breaking the law. Picasso broke rules. Steve Jobs broke rules. Elon Musk breaks rules. This is what Seth Godin calls the Purple Cow effect. If you want to stand out of the crowd, you have to be different. And yet one of people’s greatest fears is being different, and standing out from the crowd. Or worse yet, standing in front of the crowd and leading them with your own ideas. But the very most worthy and profitable thing in the world is doing just that. Finding your own voice and speaking out. The world rewards authenticity and everyone has something worth sharing.
